MTIA Leads Industry-wide SRT Use and Integration Study

With the evolution of enabling technologies that promise greater information efficiency in healthcare delivery, many are turning to speech recognition technology (SRT) as a solution for health data capture and documentation. However, few statistics and virtually no industry data exist on the adoption and integration of this technology. To that end, MTIA has partnered with AHDI, convening a task force to study the current use of SRT in healthcare delivery. An initial white paper outlining the goals/objectives of this initiative as well as a use and integration terminology resource has already been developed and is being finalized. The second phase of this project is focused on gathering data through an industry-wide survey to ascertain trends, practices, experiences, and challenges in SRT adoption.

This survey is being distributed by MTIA with cooperation from the following organizations:

· American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
· American Medical Association (AMA)
· Medical Group Managers Association (MGMA)
· American Hospital Association (AHA)
· Healthcare Information Management and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)

If you have personal experience with speech-recognition technology, either front-end or back-end (or both), we encourage you to take the time to participate in this survey. There is a separate survey set for each SR-related role (physician/provider, HIM director/practice manager, MTSO, hospital CFO, and healthcare documentation worker). Your insight and feedback will be critical to shaping best practices and standards around use and adoption of SRT. You can access this survey from the MTIA home page or go directly to the survey by clicking the link below:

Week of 10/6 AHDI Updates

CDA4CDT Coalition Submits Public Comment on Clinical Encounter Note
The American Health Information Community (AHIC), an advisory board which makes recommendations to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, recently requested feedback related to standards development in the area of Clinical Encounter Note Details. AHIC has drafted a list of gaps and extensions to be addressed in order to develop nationally recognized standards for the completion and exchange of clinical encounter notes (including transcribed notes). The standardization work in this area of the electronic health record will directly impact the future of the dictation-transcription process. The AHIC document recognized the work already accomplished by CDA4CDT, an alliance of organizations formed nearly two years ago, with AHDI and MTIA as founding members, to develop and publish document exchange standards for narrative reports in electronic clinical documents. The CDA4CDT workgroup submitted comments to AHIC that fully support the work of medical transcriptionists and the vital role of narrative clinical information in quality patient care. Specifically, the comments "suggest that the report address directly the integration of dictation/transcription workflow. The information within the approximately 600,000,000 reports dictated each year is critical to care and must become fully integrated into EHRs and accessible to PHRs."
