Celebrate the Week That's All About YOU!

National Medical Transcriptionist Week is nearly upon us! This May 20 - 26 celebrate yourself, your profession, and the importance of what you do.

Working Together for Patient Safety is a theme that resonates throughout our industry. Serving as a second set of eyes on patient health records, healthcare documentation specialists are knowledge workers trained to look for and identify potential errors in the medical record. No matter where errors originated, healthcare documentation specialists, like everyone else involved in patient care, are passionately committed to eliminating preventable threats to patient safety.

Celebrate what you have dedicated your life to during this special week. Visit our National Medical Transcriptionist Week web page to download the 2012 poster and visit our Café Press store—the AHDI Marketplace—to get your National Medical Transcriptionist Week merchandise to commemorate this event.

National Hometown Advocacy Week

Advocate the direct relationship between healthcare documentation professionals and patient safety and share our National Hometown Advocacy Week campaign at the local level. Legislative Leaders from states around the nation are coordinating advocacy appointments with federal legislators while the lawmakers are home on congressional recess which just happens to coincide with National MT Week, May 19 to May 26, 2012. Individuals can easily join in the effort. One way is to connect with your local, state or regional chapter of AHDI. They will get you connected with the legislative leader in your state. Another option is to blanket the nation with individual outreach. Download the "Working Together for Patient Safety" posters. Mail or hand-deliver the AHDI National MT Week poster or our National Hometown Advocacy week poster to any number of local offices: hospitals or clinics, private physicians or medical group offices, state or federal legislators or the office of Health and Human Services in your state. Federal House of Representatives local offices can be found in this directory, look for their local offices on their web pages. Federal Senators can be found here. Unsure of your federal legislators? Enter your 9-digit zip code here. Most state legislators and the HHS state offices can be found using state abbreviation.gov (for example: www.ca.gov). Interested? Contact Miranda Chalabi at mchalabi@ahdionline.org or AHDI board member Karen Fox-Acosta at karen.fox@foxtx.net for more information.

Note: High-resolution version of the poster will take time to download due to complexity of artwork and file size.

Celebrate MT Week with….Other MTs!!

We know that the at-home nature of medical transcription can often be an isolated, disconnected occupation, with few opportunities to interact and network with colleagues who understand and appreciate your professional experience. There is no better way to “associate” with industry colleagues and build professional relationships than through membership in AHDI. AHDI members all around the country are gathering this week at component meetings and state conferences to celebrate the contributory value of MTs in healthcare and to build and sustain the relationships they’ve made through the association. Won’t you join them?

If you want to make a meaningful investment in your career, consider beginning that journey with AHDI membership. Visit our Why Join AHDI? page to learn more about the value of membership and the benefits you’ll receive as a member. If you join during the month of May, you’ll be eligible to receive the May benefit of the month. AHDI members seeking access to our credentialing exams will have their eligibility fee waived for the month of May. If you’re planning to take an exam, membership means saving money on your exam. Don’t miss out!

MT Week: Celebrating You!

Medical transcriptionists and editors make a high-impact contribution to patient safety and coordinated care every day by making sure patient care encounters are captured and recorded accurately and securely. But with the evolution of electronic health record systems (EHRs), the traditional role of the MT is transitioning to a hybrid one, where advanced clinical knowledge and orientation to emerging technologies will be critical. One of the most rapidly evolving roles for MTs is in the area of speech recognition (SR) editing. Whether or not you are currently asked to apply your knowledge and skills to the editing of SRT draft documents, it’s highly likely you will be at some point in your career.

Celebrate yourself during MT week by treating yourself to some professional pampering. Give your skills an upgrade by learning SRT editing to enhance your professional portfolio. To support you in this effort, AHDI and TRSi are offering an MT Week special for our SRT Editing Course - $100 off the June SRT course if you register during the month of May.

The History of MT Week - Celebrating 26 Years!

Established in 1985 by proclamation from then President Ronald Reagan, National Medical Transcriptionist Week is celebrated annually in the third week of May to bring public and industry-wide attention to the role and contribution of medical transcriptionists in healthcare delivery and clinical documentation. MTs around the country embrace this week as an opportunity to show their support of each other, and MT employers, managers and clients are encouraged to likewise celebrate their medical transcriptionists in the workplace in a unique and special way as well as by participating in national initiatives that promote the profession. This year marks the 26th year medical transcriptionists have had their profession officially recognized.

Why We Matter to Healthcare—MT Week 2010

Promoting the vital and contributory role of healthcare documentation specialists will be the central theme for National Medical Transcriptionist Week this year. As healthcare reform reshapes the delivery of patient services in the United States and regulatory agencies determine the definition of "meaningful use" of EHRs, there has never been a better opportunity for this sector to demonstrate its value in accurately and securely capturing America’s healthcare stories. This means aligning our key messages with healthcare’s goals and demonstrating why we matter to the health data capture process, both now and in the evolving EHR. You can be a part of promoting these key messages to your employers, employees, clients, and colleagues. Download the MT Week poster/flyer and post it in your workplace, share it with your clients, and promote it to regulatory agencies and legislators. If you are an MT or MT employer, consider an investment in this future value proposition by enrolling yourself or your employees in our Speech Recognition Editing Course and receive a special $100 discount off the cost of registration for May and June courses in celebration of MT Week.

"Knowledge is Everything" for National Medical Transcriptionist Week (May 18-24, 2009)

Every year in May, AHDI celebrates the critical role that healthcare documentation specialists play in the accurate capture and documentation of patient encounter information. In light of our shifting economy, the evolution of enabling technologies (like the EHR and SRT), and the workforce challenges our sector is facing, AHDI is urging all stakeholders in our sector to acknowledge the critical role that an interpretive, skilled knowledge worker will continue to play in the electronic future of healthcare delivery. As we celebrate the impact MTs and editors have on the accurate capture of clinical data, AHDI is calling all healthcare documentation workers to prepare for the future of our industry and be ready to step in to the new roles that will emerge in the EHR. It is the interpretive clinical knowledge of this skilled worker that will continue to make the difference between risk and quality in healthcare documentation.

To that end, AHDI is promoting our MT Week theme - Knowledge is Everything - calling all students, postgraduates, and working MTs in the industry to embrace the path of greatest potential relevance in the future:

  • Graduate from an ACCP-approved school
  • Earn your RMT credential upon graduating from your MT program
  • Adopt Benchmark KB to stay on the cutting edge of clinical information
  • Become an AHDI member and get engaged in professional development and lifelong learning
  • Embrace level II credentialing through the CMT exam
We believe this will be the path to success in the future of healthcare. Are you ready? Find out more at the AHDI MT Week page.
